Basic Bodice: Pattern Design with Justin Avery

The class offers a multi-level experience depending on the sewing level of the participant. Instruction will be a combination of in-person sessions with Justin and independent work at home, guided by pre-recorded videos.

This class teaches the basics of pattern design and upper body fit for flat and three-dimensional patterns. You will learn how to take detailed body measurements and how to use drafting tools to create patterns that fit you from the very beginning. The class will focus on tops and include techniques for setting sleeves. You will leave the course with a sloper that can be used to design custom-fitted patterns.

More advanced students will learn how these patterns and skills can then be translated to alter commercial patterns as well as learning skills required for more complex shapes and designs.

Instructor Bio:	Justin Avery is a local tailor with more than 30 years experience in the garment construction industry, and holds a degree from the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising (FIDM). His specialties include but are not limited to: pattern drafting, wedding dresses, design and construction, general alterations, reconstructions, couture, formal dresses and costuming. He believes in creating garments to fit real bodies, rather than expecting bodies to fit into the narrow range of what is currently considered fashionable.
