One Block Wonders with Pat Farber

Turn any print or fabric panel into a kaleidescope of color and pattern! Pat will guide you through the process of taking a fabric you love and creating wonderful and surprising effects with the one block wonder technique. It's a lot simpler than it looks! You will make a quilt consisting of "hexies" in an all over pattern, or hexies sewn onto a central design as seen in the photo. Four weekly sessions starting Tuesday, February 3rd 10:00am - 1:00pm. Plan on doing some cutting and piecing at home between sessions. Use the sewing machines in our classroom or bring your own. Please call 805-962-0929 to reserve a machine.

Fabrics
You can look at Pat's One Block Wonder quilts in the store for inspiration, and the staff will be there to help you pick your fabric.

Panels vs. prints: for the kaleidescope effect, you want to select a fabric with a large scale design with plenty of color and pattern variation. If using a panel, it should be 24"-36" wide with a complex image and without any empty space. Prints often have pattern repeats of 12", 24", or 36": the larger the repeat, the bigger you can make your quilt. You can use the Magic Mirror tool in store to preview the design possiblities and help you choose a fabric. It can be tough to find the right panel, so there are more options if you choose a print.

There are three options for fabric:
Panel only: 7 repeats of the same panel.
Prints only: 7 repeats of the same print.
Panel + Print: 1 panel to feature in your quilt and 6 repeats of a coordinating print to make your hexies.
Iron out creases in fabrics, without steam. Do NOT wash or starch. If using prints, bring the fabric cut into 6 or 7 identical repeats of the pattern.

Instructor Bio: Born in the Midwest, Pat comes from a long line of “practical sewing women”. Sewing was born from necessity but honed to a fun family activity. Clothing, pillowcases, drapery, and tableclothes were the most common projects, but if a party dress was needed it was often made from scratch. Pat made her wedding dress at age eighteen and is still married to Bruce over fifty years later. Pat made her first three piece suit to interview for her job as a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) and got the job. And at five foot two inches tall, Pat has had to hem almost every pair of pants she bought! Pat practiced as a CPA for over 45 years and taught individual, partnership, corporate, and fiduciary tax classes at LaVerne and for UCSB extension. Pat quilted two quilts as a child but was not seriously drawn to the art of quilting until about twenty years ago when she first saw a longarm machine on a twelve foot frame. Then she was hooked. Pat has made over 50 “One Block Wonder” quilts and is excited to share the thrill of the pattern and color variations that explode from this technique.
