Happy Villages Quilt with Helmina Schenck
Let your imagination run wild as you explore the freedom of fabric collage. Combine step, window and rooftop shapes to magically create a village with a scenic background. No seams to sew, no points to match. Fabric shapes are lightly glue-basted, then machine-stitched with a layer of tulle, which prevents the edges from fraying. You'll learn how to arrange and assemble the components and do the quilting as well. After registering you will receive an email with details on how to prepare for the class. Students should be familiar with Zoom.

Choose a layout for your project. Options include Lakeside Village (p. 16), Greek Village (p. 23), River Town (p. 36-27). The class sample is the Cove layout, which is another possibility. See page 8-9 for rooftops, windows, and doors, and page 57 for trees, bushes, and other add-ins. In the class sample, notice the yellow/lights for lights in the windows, and blacks/darks for doorways.
FABRICS:
1. Foundation Background -- Fat Quarter or larger. This is the base on which the village will be created. Can be muslin, or a panel picture that will be part of the village background, like a sunrise or sunset, ocean view, or any other landscape feature.
2. 8-10 colors in fat quarters for buildings. Batiks work well -- look for mottled or solid-like colors, no busy prints.
3. Fabric pieces that look like rocks, stone walls, garden path stepping stones
4. Fabrics for rooftops and awnings (blue for Greek village, terracotta for Spanish villas, etc)
5. 1 yd tulle in lavendar, light blue or light green to blend with fabric colors. Class sample has lavendar.
6. 1 yd cotton/poly batting
7. 1 1/2 yd coordinating fabrics for borders and binding
8. 1 yd blue for River or Lake

GENERAL SEWING SUPPLIES:
-Walking foot and free-motion foot to fit your machine
-Roxanne's Glue Baste-It (fabric glue with long, fine applicator tip)
-Rotary cutter, mat, and rulers, including small rulers
-Pinking or scallop shears, and small scissor
-Variegated threads for quilting
-Sewing pins

| Instructor Bio: | Helmina comes to us from Alaska and Washington State where she taught many quilting classes. She has been quilting and teaching for over 35 years, and also has done many quilting demonstrations in quilt shops and at quilt shows. In Alaska she won Best of Show at the Alaska State Fair for her three-dimensional Rose and floral applique quilt, and has since taught and developed new techniques. Her quilts incorporate lots of free-hand, free-motion quilting that is often done without pre-marking the spontaneous designs. In addition, she has a color signature in her work which she enjoys sharing with her students. |
